NTHU Joins Hands with Largan Precision to Establish Joint Research Center.

National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan has partnered with Largan Precision Co., a global leader in optical lens technology, to establish a joint research center. This collaboration, focusing on precision optical technology, biomedical science, material science, and energy materials, aims to advance Taiwan's optoelectronics industry by developing cutting-edge technologies and by nurturing research talent.

NTHU President W. John Kao (高為元) emphasized the shared values between Largan Precision and NTHU, focusing on advanced technology development and talent cultivation. The Largan Precision-NTHU Joint Research Center will provide students with early exposure to international corporate culture, enhancing their learning experience.

Professor Hung-Yin Tsai (蔡宏營), Dean of NTHU's College of Engineering, will lead the "Largan Precision - NTHU Joint Research Center." Tsai highlighted Largan Precision's long-standing support for NTHU students. including the awarding of scholarships for disadvantaged students in the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering.

Largan Precision expanded its scholarship program last year to support students from the College of Engineering, providing more scholarships to economically disadvantaged undergraduates. Each year Largan Precision selects five students to participate in professional work-study programs guided by professors, and also offers additional support for student teams like NTHU Racing and NTHU DIT Robotics, enabling them to excel globally.

NTHU indicated that the joint research center will focus on electromagnetic materials, automotive lenses, biomedical sensing components, and satellite optical communication equipment. Leveraging NTHU's expertise in integrating optical research with mechanical and electrical systems, the collaboration hopes to achieve significant technological breakthroughs.

Several professors will lead joint research projects with graduate students in an effort to develop innovative and high-efficiency technologies aligned with Largan Precision's expertise. Largan Precision will also establish the "NTHU-Largan Precision Distinguished Lecture Series" and the "NTHU-Largan Precision Outstanding Young Scholars" program to cultivate future talent for the optoelectronics industry.

Many key figures in Largan Precision's leadership, research, and production teams are alumni of NTHU. For instance, Vice Chairman and General Manager, You-Chih Huang (黃有執), holds degrees from NTHU's Department of Power Mechanical Engineering and was honored as the 24th Outstanding Alumnus of NTHU. Dedicated to technological research, Huang has contributed to 57 patented technologies at Largan Precision.

Currently, over a quarter of the research funding for NTHU's College of Engineering comes from industry. Professor Tsai underscored the importance of staying updated on technological developments in industry while pursuing academic excellence, stating that this was best achieved through continuous enhancement of research capabilities through industry-academia cooperation.
