NTHU and NVIDIA Establish the Innovation Center

2023.11.13

National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan and global technology leader NVIDIA formalized the collaboration on November 13, marking the establishment of the "NTHU/NVIDIA Innovation Center." This agreement is set to propel developments in AI technology and foster innovation in AI education and research. With NTHU's recent ventures in the medical field and the construction of a smart hospital in the Taoyuan Aerotropolis, the partnership anticipates significant advances in precision medicine, leveraging NVIDIA's expertise in AI healthcare.

President W. John Kao (高為元) expressed enthusiasm for the strategic alignment between NTHU and NVIDIA, emphasizing NVIDIA's global AI leadership and NTHU's dedication to AI research and education. As the first university in Taiwan to provide clear guidelines for applying AI in teaching and learning, NTHU envisions the comprehensive integration of AI into daily life and work through this collaboration.

Eunice Chiu (邱麗孟), NVIDIA Vice President and General Manager Taiwan, acknowledged NTHU's pivotal role in cultivating talent, anticipating that the collaboration will have a profound impact on academia, industry, and government.

The collaboration covers forward-looking, fundamental, and applied research; it also extends to the cultivation of talent across diverse disciplines as well as startup incubation.

Po-Wen Chiu (邱博文), Vice President for Research and Development at NTHU, highlighted the extensive history of collaboration between NTHU and NVIDIA, citing examples like Prof. Lee-Wei Yang (楊立威)'s application of AI computation to drug development for breast and pancreatic cancers.

Ethan Hsiao (蕭怡祺), Director, NVIDIA and an alumnus of NTHU's Institute of Technology Management, expressed optimism about future interdisciplinary cooperation.

Director Chun-Yi Lee (李濬屹) outlined the collaboration's four core areas: developing advanced AI technology, exploring cutting-edge AI applications, cultivating and certifying young talent, and promoting startup development. The "NTHU/NVIDIA Innovation Center" aims to inject new momentum into AI education and industrial innovation in Taiwan.

The center will promote the Deep Learning Institute Ambassador Program, enhancing students' practical skills and innovative thinking in AI. NVIDIA has committed to supporting startup companies established by NTHU students by providing technical support and development assistance.

NVIDIA has been a long-term sponsor of NTHU, offering crucial technical support to our faculty and students in international competitions. Professor Jerry Chou (周志遠) from the Department of Computer Science, backed by NVIDIA's support, led students to multiple global championships in international supercomputer competitions. Professor Chou attributes their recent success to NVIDIA's substantial improvements in GPU computing capabilities as well as advancements in hardware and software technology.

Professor Chun-Yi Lee (李濬屹) from the Department of Computer Science, who has collaborated with NVIDIA for nearly a decade, will serve as the director of the "NTHU/NVIDIA Innovation Center" with Professor Chi-Chun Lee (李祈均) from the Department of Electrical Engineering acting as the deputy director. The core aim of this initiative is to explore diverse and innovative cooperation in teaching, research, and entrepreneurship.
