Five NTHU Scholars Elected as New Academicians of Academia Sinica

Being selected as an academician of Academia Sinica is the highest honor in Taiwan's academic community. On July 4, Academia Sinica announced its 34th class of academicians, inducting 28 new members. Among them are five distinguished scholars from National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan.
 

Academician Rur-bin Yang (楊儒賓) is a Chair Professor at the Graduate Institute of Philosophy at NTHU, Academician Jien-Wei Yeh (葉均蔚) is a Chair Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at NTHU, and Academician Shang-Cheng Hung (洪上程) is a Jointly Appointed Professor in the Department of Chemistry at NTHU and Academia Sinica.
 
The Chairman of the China Foundation, Chao-Shiuan Liu (劉兆玄), underscored the foundation's pivotal role in modern education and culture. He introduced a new book, "A Century of Glory - The China Foundation's Century-Long Journey," and reflected on the foundation's steadfast dedication to education over the past hundred years.
 
Academicians Douglas Yu (余振華) and Wei Shyy (史維) are both alumni of the Class of '77 from NTHU. The fact that two new academicians hail from the Class of '77 fills their classmates and teachers with immense pride.
 
Chen emphasized the foundation's origin as a Sino-American initiative set up to manage the returned indemnity funds. Initially, a third of the board members were American, a practice that continues today.
 
Chair Professor Rur-bin Yang (Academician of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences)
 
Chair Professor Rur-bin Yang, who specializes in Chinese philosophy and religious studies, has received numerous prestigious research awards. His book, Zhuangzi in the Confucian Temple,《儒門內的莊子》was recognized as the "Most Influential Research Book of 2020" by the Ministry of Science and Technology in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences.
 
Professor Yang and his wife, Professor Sheng-ping Fang (方聖平), have actively contributed to establishing the NTHU Heritage Museum, donating thousands of East Asian manuscripts, books, and artworks. These collections are now housed at NTHU and exhibited to the public.
 
Chair Professor Jien-Wei Yeh (BS '76, MS '80, PhD '86 in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at NTHU, Academician of the Division of Engineering Sciences)

 

Chair Professor Jien-Wei Yeh, the "Father of High-Entropy Alloys," has made significant contributions to materials science. A proud alumnus of NTHU, he pioneered the high-entropy materials field, leading to over 16,000 scholarly articles worldwide by the end of last year.

 

In 2021, Professor Yeh received the Outstanding Science and Technology Contribution Award from the Executive Yuan. In 2024, he was ranked second globally and first in Taiwan for his impact in materials science on the "Global Top 2% Scientists" list.
 
Jointly Appointed Professor Shang-Cheng Hung (BS '87, PhD '92, in the Department of Chemistry at NTHU, Academician of the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences)
 
Professor Shang-Cheng Hung, an esteemed alumnus of NTHU, holds a joint professorship in the Chemistry Department at NTHU and Academia Sinica. He has received numerous accolades, including the Ministry of Education Academic Award and the NSTC Future Technology Award. His discoveries in spinal neuron repair offer hope for paralysis treatment.

Academician Douglas Yu is Vice President of R&D at TSMC and one of their esteemed "Six Knights of R&D," leading the development of CoWoS packaging technology, which has significantly contributed to the advancement of AlphaGo and generative AI. He received the Presidential Science Prize in 2017, was elected as an IEEE fellow in 2013, and was honored as NTHU's 19th Distinguished Alumnus in 2018.
 
NTHU alumnus Wei Shyy (Power Mechanical Engineering ('77), Academician of the Division of Engineering Sciences).
 
Academician Wei Shyy is a renowned aerospace engineer and a fellow of both the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He served as President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and was honored as NTHU's 14th Distinguished Alumnus in 2013.
