In April, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan celebrates its 113th anniversary and the 68th anniversary of its reestablishment in Taiwan. To mark this occasion, NTHU has launched the "NTHU Energized!" fundraising campaign. The goal is to raise NT$1 billion by year-end.

Alongside supporting faculty development through the "Tsing Hua Talent Development Fund" and fostering diverse student learning via the "New Horizon Fund," donors can also participate in activities such as inscribing messages at Lake Success and sponsoring President W. John Kao's (高為元) fundraising run for the "Sports Development Fund."

President Kao emphasized the need for increased resources to enhance teaching, research, and societal impact, especially in the face of international competition and new challenges. The 113th anniversary theme, "NTHU Energized!" aims to harness the power of alumni and the wider community to generate a new wave of energy.

Reflecting the university's tradition of "no NTHU without sports," this year's fundraising agenda includes support for sports development. President Kao will personally participate in the campus marathon on April 27th to raise funds for this cause.

Last year, President Kao achieved the fifth position among male faculty members in the campus marathon, completing 4.2 kilometer in 22 minutes and 11 seconds, earning him the title of the fastest-running president in NTHU history. This year, his goal is to surpass his previous record through training. For every one-second improvement, it is hoped that sponsors will pledge NT$100 to the Sports Development Fund.

President Kao stated, "Sports strengthen physical fitness and nurture determination." He saw many athletes setting goals and striving for success in NTHU's sports fields and at the Meichu Games. Such training will help individuals face challenges, encouraging them to persist and pursue self-improvement. He is delighted to encourage NTHU students who love sports by running.

Another interesting fundraising initiative involves the chance to inscribe messages at Lake Success. According to the Vice President for Alumni Service and Resources Development, Min Lee (李敏), Lake Success is one of the most beloved scenic spots for both alumni and the residents of Hsinchu.

After its refurbishment last year, 25 landscape lamps were installed around the lake. Each lamp post will feature four plaques for sponsors supporting the "Lake Success Eco Project" to leave their memories of NTHU, blessings, or mottos.

Lee mentioned that a donation of NT$60,000 allows the plaque to be displayed by Lake Success for two years, and NT$100,000 extends this to four years. With a playful tone, he said the wishes might be more efficacious than those on temple lanterns.

Alumni may also decide to leave hidden messages, such as "Wishing you a better life than mine," commemorating their time at NTHU in a way that only they or someone special would understand.

The "Tsing Hua Talent Development Fund" aims to attract talent and improve faculty academic performance. This year, for the first time, NTHU will offer research incentives to outstanding faculty members. An estimated one-third of professors are expected to receive awards ranging from NT$200,000 to NT$500,000.

The "New Horizon Fund" aims to support diverse student learning at NTHU. It will offer scholarships to students engaged in international competitions and overseas volunteer service, grants for international exchange programs, funding for student club activities, and assistance for sports activities and training.

Lee mentioned that to ensure sponsors are able to direct their support to their designated areas, this year's anniversary fundraising campaign also includes specific fundraising initiatives for various departments.

For instance, the Graduate Institute of Art and Technology initiated a fundraiser to establish a 3D volume scanning laboratory and a bio-art laboratory, while the College of Education launched a campaign to set up theater classrooms in the new college building.
