National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan is southbound! President W. John Kao (高為元) and Kaohsiung Mayor Chi-Mai Chen (陳其邁) signed a memorandum of understanding at the Kaohsiung City Government on January 8th. The "NTHU Kaohsiung Branch Campus" is committed to cultivate talented students in semiconductors, AI, and sustainable development.
 
President Kao highlighted the NTHU Kaohsiung Branch Campus's goal to nurture talents in technology, management, and policymaking and to undertake innovative research.
 
The first phase includes a branch of the NTHU College of Semiconductor Research (CoSR), including various master's degree programs. The later phase will involve the expansion of course offerings to cover AI and sustainable development and the establishment of PhD programs.
 
President Kao spoke of NTHU's collaboration with Kaohsiung Medical University regarding the establishment of NTHU Affiliated Hospital in Taoyuan. "After inviting a top university from the south to collaborate, we are happy to reciprocate and to enhance talent development and technological research in southern Taiwan," he said.
 
Mayor Chen emphasized the current need for a top-tier university in Kaohsiung. He expressed pride in having invited NTHU to establish a branch university, considering it his best decision for the city. Chen hopes that the youth of Kaohsiung will choose NTHU for their education, fostering both talent development and research opportunities.
 
Senior Vice President Nyan-Hwa Tai (戴念華) foresees that within a decade, the NTHU Kaohsiung Branch Campus will accommodate hundreds of professors and thousands of students.
 
Dean Burn-Jeng Lin (林本堅) from NTHU CoSR observed that Kaohsiung's technological prominence can be seen in the presence of TSMC, Foxconn, and other industry leaders. The branch of NTHU CoSR in Kaohsiung will boast top-notch faculty who will cultivate future talent and facilitate extensive collaboration between academia and industry, contributing valuable expertise to Kaohsiung's tech hub.
 
The NTHU Kaohsiung Branch Campus receives robust backing from alumni and industry leaders. Endorsements come from the Chairman of the NTHU Alumni Association and past and present leaders of the Southern Alumni Association. Industry representatives, including NXP Taiwan GM, Foxconn's HR Chief, and delegates from TSMC, ASE, IBM, Compal, HTC, AUO, and PEGATRON, express strong support and eagerness for collaboration.
